Soccer 101: Bestie, Let’s Kick It! 🏀🕺🌟

Hey bestie, ever watched a soccer game and thought, "Why are they running so much?" Or maybe you just want to impress someone with your ⚽ knowledge? Either way, you’re in the right place. We’re breaking it all down bestie to bestie—because we’re about to make you the it girl of soccer talk.

And since we’re all in on supporting Racing Louisville FC, our hometown queens of the pitch, you know we had to put together a WOW-style guide to the game. Grab your purple You Can Kick It With Us tee and let’s get into it.

Soccer, But Make It Simple 🏀✨

A soccer game (or match, if you wanna sound fancy) has two teams of 11 players on the field. The goal? Score more goals than the other team. Easy enough, right?

The game is split into two 45-minute halves with a 15-minute halftime in between (aka, snack break). If the game is tied at the end? Depending on the competition, there might be extra time or a penalty shootout (more on that in a sec).

How to Score (and Not Just on the Field) 💌💪

The only way to score is by getting the ball into the net past the goalkeeper (aka, the GOAT of blocking your dreams). Each goal = one point, and there’s no limit—just vibes, speed, and footwork.

But here’s the thing: offside is a thing. If a player is closer to the opponent’s goal than the last defender when the ball is passed to them, the ref calls offside and stops the play. (Translation: no camping out near the goal for an easy shot. Gotta work for it, bestie!)

The MVPs on the Field 👀⚽

  • Forwards 💥 – The scorers. The ones taking shots and making highlight reels.

  • Midfielders 🛠️ – The queens of control, linking defense to attack. They pass, they defend, they do it all.

  • Defenders 🛡️ – The brick wall stopping the other team’s forwards. If you try to score, they will ruin your day.

  • Goalkeeper (aka Keeper) 🧤 – The last line of defense. They can use their hands, unlike everyone else. (Jealous.)

Penalty Kicks, Free Kicks & Other Drama 🚨💨

Soccer can get spicy. If a player breaks the rules (aka fouls someone), the ref might call for a free kick or a penalty kick, depending on where the foul happened.

  • Free Kick – Happens if a team is fouled outside the penalty box. They get to kick the ball without interference.

  • Penalty Kick – If a defender fouls an attacker inside the penalty box, the attacking team gets a one-on-one shot against the goalkeeper from 12 yards out. Major pressure.

  • Yellow Card 💛 – A warning. Two of these = a red card.

  • Red Card 🔴 – Bye bestie! The player is kicked out of the game, and their team has to play one person down. Yikes.

Meet the Queens: Racing Louisville FC 🏆🌟

Let’s talk Racing Louisville FC, our fave women’s soccer team repping the 502! These powerhouse players bring the heat every single game, and we are obsessed. Not only are they crushing it on the field, but they’re also leading the charge for women’s sports in Louisville.

And because we love to show our support in style, we created the See the Love Campaign—where fans rock purple heart sunglasses to Racing games so the players can literally see the love from the pitch. Bestie, if you’re not wearing them at the next match, are you even a fan?! 💖💙

So, grab your heart sunglasses, your You Can Kick It With Us tee, and LET’S GO. We’ll see you in the stands, bestie!
